Darien resident Conrad Jacques understands the importance of keeping children safe in cars. That's why he appreciates efforts of officials in educating parents on the proper installation of child safety seats. On Saturday, the Darien Police Department will do exactly that when it hosts its National Seat Check Saturday event.
"It's great that they're doing that," Jacques said. "Sometimes parents have a hard time getting those seats in the car, so it's a great thing to have professionals helping us out with that."
The event is sponsored by Students Against Destructive Decisions and will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Depot Teen Center on Heights Road. Certified technicians will be on hand to check safety seats and educate parents on proper techniques for keeping children safe in cars.
"It's the responsibility of every parent and caregiver out there to make sure their children are safely restrained every trip, every time," Detective Mark Cappelli said. "We are urging everyone to get their child safety seats inspected. When it comes to the safety of a child, there is no room for mistakes."
Sgt. Jeremiah Marron hopes for a big turnout. "If we can prevent one injury, one accident with this, it will be worth it," he said.
Jacques said that when he was in an accident, his first thought was of the safety of his kids. "It's vitally important," he said. "You can't be too careful, and I think people need to be more aware and make sure their kids are safe."
Cappelli said that it is important for parents to remember that children should use safety seats until at least the age of 8, and that all children younger than 13 should sit in the back seat.
