Director Wants Play to Be the Thing

Donna Wyant, a Darien resident, hopes to bring some culture to the town as she directs "Waiting for Philip Glass," a one-act play written by Wendy Wasserstein. It will be performed at the Darien Library on Oct. 15 and 17. "It's light, it's fun, it brings the community in and it's an alternative to the Friday cinema night," she said.

Wyant, who has spent her career in soap operas, television, and films and in producing television shows, had never previously participated in community theater. "I'm delighted to do something worthwhile like a Wasserstein play. What's thrilling for me is we get to do these things without a whole lot of interference, and a whole lot of support," Wyant said.

The play, featuring a cast of six actors, revolves around a socialite who throws a benefit at her Hampton home for famed composer Philip Glass, who is late to the party. As the partygoers wait for the man of the hour, they are forced to talk amongst themselves, which leads to an interesting night.

"Some of the actors are very highly skilled and just between major shows," Wyant said.

Performing the play at the library is another great service, according to Wyant. "There are so many activities here," she said. "This is the first year for this, and I think this is an absolutely perfect way to expose the community to theater."

"Waiting for Philip Glass" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 17.
