With 4 to 6 inches of snow in the forecast for this morning, conditions were expected to deteriorate as commuters headed out Friday morning for work. No major problems had been reported by 6:15 a.m., but speeds were already reduced with snow reported on major roadways such as I-84, I-95, the Merritt Parkway, Route 7 and Route 8/25.
Fairfield County, the metro New York area and most of Connecticut will remain under a Winter Weather Advisory until noon Friday, the National Weather Service said. Eastern Connecticut is under a Winter Storm Warning.
Schools were closed Friday in every school district in Fairfield County, said the National Weather Service.
Snow was covering the ground and beginning to coat roadways before dawn, with accumulation expected to quickly increase as the morning progressed.
Moderate to heavy snow combined with winds of 10 to 20 mph could reduce visibility for drivers to a quarter mile. Driving conditions were expected to deteriorate as the snowfall increased and as more commuters hit the road.
The snow will continue into early afternoon with temperatures in the mid-30s.
Friday evening will be mostly clear with temps of about 20 degrees.
The snow will begin to melt on Saturday, when it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 39 degrees although wind chills will make it feel between 20 and 30.
