Trump Comes Out On Top In Connecticut GOP Straw Poll

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Donald Trump came out on top of the Connecticut Republican Straw Poll held in six municipalities across the state over the weekend, according to the News-Times.

In the nonbinding vote held Friday night, Trump got 35 percent of the vote, beating U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida at 18 percent and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas at 17 percent, the Connecticut Republican Party told the News-Times.

Trump scored victories in Brookfield, Stamford, Stratford and Manchester, while Cruz topped Trump in Southington and the two tied in Groton.

Brookfield GOP Chairman Matt Grimes said Trump’s popularity with voters, who came from Danbury, Bethel, Brookfield and other nearby towns, wasn’t surprising.

The most recent Quinnipiac University survey also gives Trump with a big lead in the race for the Republican nomination for president. The first caucus in the race will be in Iowa on Feb. 1, with the first primary will be Feb. 9 in New Hampshire. Connecticut's primary is on April 26.
