Malloy Accuses GOP Senators Of ‘Terrible Lies’ About Supreme Court Vacancy

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Gov. Dannel Malloy has joined the political fray over the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court after the death last weekend of Justice Antonin Scalia.

After a meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House on Friday, Malloy accused Republican senators of "terrible lies" in saying that the president should not name a replacement this late in his term, according to the CT Mirror.

Malloy disputed Republican claims that Supreme Court candidates have not been confirmed late in previous presidents' tenures, the CT Mirror said.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, who replaced the retiring Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr., was confirmed in the last year of President Ronald Reagan’s second term, the CT Mirror said.

Malloy, who is in Washington all weekend for the National Governor’s Association winter meeting, also said it is the job of senators to hold hearings and a vote after Obama names a nominee, the CT Mirror said.

Through Monday, Malloy will attend sessions of the governors meeting. On Sunday, he will receive a classified threat briefing at the FBI headquarters.

Malloy will join other governors for a reception with Obama at the White House on Sunday and for another meeting Monday with Obama at the White House.
