Hospitalized CT Firefighter, 26, In Critical Condition After Collapsing During Blaze

A Connecticut firefighter is in critical condition following a fire that broke out at a historic building that also injured two others.

The three-alarm fire started in Litchfield County, in the Town of New Hartford, around 2:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, on the third floor and the roof of the building at 4 Bridge St., Jon Barbagallo, public information officer for Norfolk said.

According to Barbagallo, 75 to 100 first responders were on the scene and to work as stand-by units.

During the fire, a 26-year-old Burlington Fire Department volunteer collapsed after experienced a medical emergency and was transported to John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington, said Fire Chief Michael Boucher. 

"The firefighter is currently in critical condition and being tended to by a team of physicians," the chief said. "We ask that you keep our firefighters in your thoughts and prayers.

Information was not available concerning the condition of the two other injured firefighters. 

The building, constructed in 1850, is a three-story structure known as the New Hartford House and has 14 apartments on two floors and six businesses on the ground floor.

The old hotel serves as the town anchor for the center of New Hartford, Barbagallo said.

A cause for the fire has yet to be determined.
