Connecticut State Police Probe Fatal Crash On I-84, Make DUI Arrests

As of Sunday morning, State police troopers have handed out nearly 900 speeding tickets over the long Thanksgiving weekend. They are also investigating a crash into a tree off I-84 in Southbury that killed two men.

The Connecticut State Police Department boosted its patrols on state roads for the holiday weekend.

The increased patrols began at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, and will conclude at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27.

Troopers are patrolling the roads and highways across Connecticut focusing on drunken driving violations and aggressive drivers.

These State Police stats cover the time period starting at midnight Wednesday Nov. 23 to 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 27:

Speeding violations: 896
Seatbelt violations: 311
Other hazardous moving violations: 2,503 (including unsafe lane change, following too closely, cellphone usage, texting, failure to signal, etc.)
DUI arrests: 51
Accidents investigated: 392, 42 of which had injuries. One accident had two fatalities.

The fatal accident occurred Friday morning. Two men from Massachusetts were killed in a fiery crash after their Subaru Legacy slammed into a tree near Exit 14 of westbound I-84 in Southbury, state police said.

The accident occurred at 9:45 a.m. Friday, and the off-ramp was closed until about 1:30 p.m.

The two people killed were the driver, Warren Rynkar, 69, of Malden, Mass., and the lone passenger, John Rynkar, 26, of the same hometown.

For comparison, here are the statistics for the entire 2015 Thanksgiving holiday:

Speeding: 1,204
Seatbelt Violations: 432
Other Hazardous Moving Violations: 3,160, including unsafe lane change, following too closely, cell phone usage, texting, failure to signal, etc.
DUI Arrests: 46
Accidents Investigated: 513, 59 of which had Injuries, including one fatality
