MONROE, Conn. – John Meropoulos, of Monroe, died Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was 86.
He was born in Bridgeport on Oct. 17, 1929, to George and Helen Meropoulos.
He attended Bassick High school and the University of Bridgeport and worked at his family's restaurant, "The Famous," on Fairfield Avenue.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed by Perkin Elmer in Norwalk for more than 30 years, where he worked as an optical polisher and a contributor toward the Hubbell Space Telescope Program that launched in 1990.
He was an active parishioner at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Bridgeport. He was on the basketball and softball team for the Connecticut Eastern Orthodox basketball and softball leagues. He later became a member of the Athletic Committee and coached youth basketball, where he experienced multiple championships throughout his coaching reign.
He was inducted into the Holy Trinity inaugural hall of fame on Nov. 7, 2015. He was very proud of all of his grandchildren and was known to have never missed a game or swim meet. He loved spending time with his family, playing golf, reading and was an avid sports fan.
He was predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Tina.
He is survived by his children, Jodi Costeines of Shelton and her husband, Jason; George Meropoulos and his wife, Phyllis, of Monroe; his grandchildren, Brian, Alexandra and Colin; and sister, Luella Garafallou of Houston, Texas.
He was predeceased by his brother Paul Meropoulos of Bridgeport.
Calling hours will take place Friday from 4-8 p.m. in The Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St., Bridgeport, with Trisagion services at 5 p.m. in the funeral home.
Friends are invited to attend the rite of burial Saturday at 9 a.m. in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4070 Park Ave., Bridgeport, followed by interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull.
