According to "Mileposts," a newsletter for MTA Metro-North Railroad customers, the following work has been completed or is in the process of being completed:

On the Hudson and New Haven Lines, Metro-North intends to replace 44,800 ties, as well as resurface 91 miles of track bed. Metro-North Railroad does surfacing to remove small surface and alignment deviations by compacting the stone under the ties.

Across all three lines, Metro-North will: conduct about 8.24 miles of rail renewal work; replace 52 switches; weld 1,600 rail joints; and restore 24 grade crossings (ties, rail, crossing pads, etc.).

Due to a mild winter, Metro-North has accomplished the following this year as of late February:

  • In Grand Central Terminal: Most of the 2016 work has been focused on the completion of the Ladder K switch renewal program, which began in 2015. Ladder K is the first set of turnouts and switches a train reaches when heading south from the Park Avenue Tunnel. In all, Metro-North surfaced 11,600-plus feet of track; renewed five switches and used its Rail Vac aid in the replacement of 102 ties.
  • On the New Haven Line, about 8,750 feet of track bed has been surfaced and 73 rail joints welded.

Current/upcoming projects include:

  • Tie Replacement Work: On the New Haven Line, Metro-North plans to have about 16,200 new rail ties in place by late June. This work is underway and by May, it plans to replace about 7,500 ties in a segment between the South Norwalk and Southport Stations. Once that stretch is completed, it will start on an adjacent section that covers Stamford to South Norwalk, where it will change out about 8,700 ties. This work should be done by the end of June.
  • Switch Renewal/Installation Work: Spring switch renewal/installation work will take place on the New Haven Line. In Stamford Yard on the New Haven Line, Metro-North will renew 12 switches/crossover panels.
