Wondering by now what the top summer road trip places are?

Oregon, Nevada, Utah, North Carolina and Minnesota, WalletHub.com said.

The personal finance social media network's outcomes came from analyzing such areas as highest and lowest average gas prices, lowest and highest prices of camping. The report also assigned points to such categories as fewest and most car thefts per capita, "national park units" per square mile, and scenic byways.

The analysis compared the 50 states, giving equally weighted dimensions to driving and lodging costs, road conditions and safety, and fun and scenic attractions, and then calculated "less than" points for such areas as highest and lowest average gas prices, said the report.

In all, 21 "relevant metrics that speak to each state’s suitability to summer travelers with a dual mandate of fun and frugality" produced results that also included road quality and number of attractions, WalletHub.com said.

Here's how Connecticut landed in the following categories, according to the report (1=Best; 25=Avg.):

  • Number of Attractions: 43rd
  • Lowest Price of Three-Star Hotel: 30th
  • Average Gas Prices: 38th
  • Number of Nightlife Operations per Capita: 39th
  • Number of Scenic Byways: 49th
  • Lowest Price of Camping: 46th
