The hotel, a Hilton-owned Hampton Inn, will begin construction following completion of work on the waterfront bulkhead, which is underway, said Mayor Bill Finch.

“Hilton joins Starbucks, Chipotle, Cinépolis and Bass Pro Shops as national brands that are investing in Steelpointe and bringing jobs to Bridgeport,” he said.

The Hampton Inn will feature a waterfront view, and will be constructed between East Main and Pembroke streets.

“Hilton has given their approval to go ahead with the project,” said Robert Christoph Jr., principal of Bridgeport Landing Development, which is part of Miami-based RCI Group. “It speaks volumes to where the project has gotten, and the comfort level that national and international brands have with coming to the city of Bridgeport.”

Opening soon, Starbucks and Chipotle have each held job fairs within the past couple weeks. They’ll open in a complex located at Stratford Avenue and East Main Street with T-Mobile in the next month.

And, Bass Pro Shops -- which has nearly 90 locations nationwide and is listed on the Forbes.com list of best employers in America – will open its Bridgeport location by year’s end.

The Hilton-owned Hampton Inn announcement follows a recent notice that Cinépolis USA, a luxury cinema complex, will build a 50,000-square-foot cinema, which is projected to open in 2017.

Steelpointe Harbor is a 2-million-square-foot super regional waterfront project located adjacent to I-95 in Bridgeport. Spanning 82 acres, the project will feature more than 750,000 square feet of retail, restaurants and entertainment, a 12-screen premium theater, two hotels, 1,100 mid-and-high rise residential units, 30,000 square feet of office and a 200-slip full service deep water marina.

Steel Point is a peninsula ringed by waterfront along Yellow Mill Channel and the Pequannock River with the Long Island Sound on its southern edge and I-95 and the city’s East Side on the north end.

Shipbuilding began on the banks of this area in the early 1700s, when a wharf and store were also built in this location. And in the late 1800s, the peninsula was booming with commerce.
