Chipotle Fanatics Find New Spot To Call Home In Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Bridgeport resident Leila Marcellus used to drive all the way to Milford for a Chipotle fix.

“I have waited for this for months,” Marcellus said, dining on a chicken burrito in the fast food chain’s new location at Steel Point on Friday. “I love Chipotle. Chipotle is my life!”

The popular eatery opened its doors Sunday with little fanfare, according to Assistant General Manager Ashley Singer.

“We are more of a word-of-mouth place,” she said. “We rely on our Chipotle fanatics to spread the word.”

It must be working, as Singer and her crew — most of whom live in Bridgeport — had a steady line of customers at noon Friday. Many loyal fans remarked that they were happy to not have to travel to Fairfield or Milford anymore, she said.

Reggae music played as workers piled beans and salsa on burritos, tacos and bowls for hungry diners. The restaurant is hoping to serve up its signature margaritas and beer as soon as it receives a liquor license, Singer said.

A Bridgeport resident whose husband was born and raised in the city, Singer said she realizes how important the Steel Point development is for many.

“People are really excited for everything that’s happening at Steel Point,” she said. “It’s something positive for Bridgeport.”

Marcellus brought her friend Stephanie Sanchez of Bridgeport for her first Chipotle meal on Friday.

“It was really good,” said Sanchez. “I liked it.”

“Come to the Chipotle dark side!” Marcellus joked, holding up a bag containing a second burrito she planned to eat for dinner.

Chipotle at Steel Point is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Steel Point is also home to the city's first Starbucks. The Bass Pro Shop, the center of the development, will hold its grand opening on Wednesday.
