Ismael Freytes-Rodriguez, 39, of Springfield, was sentenced to 18 to 20 years in prison after he was found guilty on Oct. 7 of three counts each of aggravated rape and abuse of a child and rape of a child with force. His age was an aggravating factor for the first three counts, Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Prosecutors sought 20 to 25 years in state prison. The defense asked for seven to 10 years, followed by three years of probation.

The victim, who is now 16, attended the sentencing. Assistant District Attorney Carrie Kenniston and the victim’s Department of Children and Families social worker read a statement to the court.

“These are among the most heinous crimes imaginable, and when a child is the victim, the harm is especially devastating,” District Attorney Gulluni said in a news release. “Protecting children from these horrific acts and holding offenders accountable is a responsibility we take extremely seriously.”

Gulluni also praised Kenniston for her work on the case.
