Antonella Galindo Merlo died in a car accident while studying at the University of Melbourne earlier this month, the GW Hatchet says citing university officials.

Antonella's family is raising money to save the Giant Manta Rays of Ecuador, specifically through an organization dedicated to protecting the species — a cause Antonella cared about deeply.

"Antonella was a brilliant soul who left us too soon," reads the campaign. "She was passionate about the conservation of the sea that she loved. After learning to dive, she experienced immense joy to see and swim among these beautiful creatures.

"Her love for Manta Rays was so great that she even got one of them tattooed since seeing them was an experience that marked her life. Therefore, in her honour, we want to raise funds to preserve these marine species so that more people can share these beautiful memories."

Galindo's LinkedIn says she was majoring in internal affairs in minoring in psychological brain sciences with a concentration in security policy. She was working toward a career as an attorney, "with a keen interest in the interplay between international law and critical global challenges such as environmental issues, immigration, and human rights."

She was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority on campus, who in an Instagram post remembered Antonella for her "positive energy that created a welcoming space for our members to thrive in.

"Antonella was the epitome of a sister. She was caring, loving, and most of all, kind."

Her SK sisters remembered her for her light that "filled every room," her bravery, and as an inspiration.

A vigil will be held on campus April 5 in Kogan Plaza.
