Teacher Shot By Student In Virginia On Road To Recovery

The first grade teacher who was shot by one of her 6-year-old students in Virginia was on the road to recovery as of Monday, Jan. 9.

Abby Zwerner, 25, was able to confiscate the gun from her first grade student at Richneck Elementary School last week when he pulled the trigger, a parent tells the Washington Post.

Zwerner was in serious but stable condition, confirms Richneck Elementary School in a statement

"We are happy to learn today that she is in stable condition and is talking with family and friends," school officials state.

Zwerner had reportedly yelled to the rest of the students to run away during the altercation, according to multiple reports. Police do not believe that the shooting was accidental, the reports continue.

Richneck Elementary School will be closed through Friday, Jan. 13 as staff and students process the terrifying incident. 

Meal service will be available to those who need it, and personal belongings may be able to be picked up on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
