“It’s disheartening,” LaShay Makal, the commander of the MPD’s Seventh District, said on Sunday, April 16 at the scene of the latest shooting in Southeast DC. “It’s outrageous ... And the community should be outraged as well.”
Officers were called at approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon to the 2700 block of Douglas Place, where there was a report of a young child who had suffered from a gunshot wound in the back.
Makal said that the initial investigation determined that the child was struck while sitting in the back of a vehicle with two adults in the 1500 block of Shippen Lane. Unaware that the girl was hit, the two continued on until stopping on Douglas Place and calling the police.
The girl was taken to an area hospital in stable condition for treatment and evaluation of her injuries. She is not believed to have been the target, according to Makal.
At the scene of the shooting on Shippen Lane, investigators recovered multiple shell casings in the roadway, though no motive for the shooting has been announced.
Investigators described the shooting suspect only as being a Black man who was wearing a dark ski mask operating a dark-colored sedan. No additional information about the incident was provided by the department.
