Homicides Up 17 Percent In DC; New Death Reported: Metropolitan Police

The Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation into the latest fatal shooting in Southeast DC.

Deandre Wheeler, 27, of Southeast DC, has been identified as the victim who was shot and killed overnight by unknown assailants, according to officials.

Shortly before 10:20 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, officers from the Seventh District responded to the 4200 block of 4th Street in Southeast DC to investigate reports of a shooting not far from an area elementary school.

Upon arrival, officers found Wheeler suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and DC Fire and Emergency Medical Service personnel pronounced him dead at the scene “after finding no signs consistent with life.”

His body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further investigation.

No suspect or motive for the shooting has been released by police investigators.

There have now been 69 reported homicides in the District, according to MPD, up from 59 from the same time a year ago, an increase of 17 percent in 2023.
