Hammer-Wielding Man Attacked Two People At Northeast DC Liquor Store, Police Say

Police say that a man attacked two people with a hammer who attempted to stop him from robbing a liquor store in Northeast DC this week.

Metropolitan Police Department detectives were called to a business in the unit block of M Street NE at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31 to investigate a reported assault involving a hammer-wielding man.

According to officials, 40-year-old Alfonso Alegria, who has no fixed address, took items from shelves and attempted to leave without paying, at which point he was confronted by two others. 

At that point, it is alleged that Alegria attacked them with a hammer and fled. 

On Thursday night, police say that Alegria was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. No information about his initial court appearance has been released by the department. 

The incident remains under investigation.
