District resident Kevin Thomas, 57, was sentenced by a judge to 180 days in jail, suspended, 18 months of supervised probation, mental health and drug treatment services as deemed necessary, and ordered that Thomas make a $50 payment to the Victims of Violent Crimes Fund following an incident involving a resident.

According to court documents, Thomas was employed as a customer service rep and smoking aide at Capital City Skilled Nursing Facility, where he was tasked with taking individuals outside of the facility to designated smoking areas.

On Nov. 29, 2021, a "vulnerable adult" resident in the facility reported that a staff member pushed him from his wheelchair while he was attempting to enter the smoking area.

Prosecutors say that the resident stated that Thomas pushed him and he fell out of his wheelchair and onto the ground, where he lay for several minutes without any assistance.

Thomas was later caught on camera doing the deed, he was suspended rom the facility and the incident was reported to the District's Department of Health.

Thomas pleaded guilty in Superior Court to one count of criminal abuse of a vulnerable adult or elderly person.
