The Clark County Sherif's Office identified the eight Virginia victims as:
James K. McCoy (driver), 46; Linda Byler, 44; Lydia Byler, 24; Orla Schrock 24; Ellen Schrock, 23; Delila Schrock, 21; Suzanna Hertzler, 18, and the 6-month-old baby.
Multiple news outlets including ABC affiliate WISN said the eight Virginia victims were members of an Amish community in Virginia.
The semi tractor-trailer, operated by 51-year-old Daniel G. Liddicoat, of WI, was heading eastbound on State Highway 95 when a van headed north on County Highway J entered the intersection around 7:50 a.m., Clark County Chief Deputy James Hirsch said.
The van was struck by the truck, ejecting Liddicoat. The semi entered the north ditch and struck a driveway leading to a wooded area.
The trailer, which was about ¼ full of milk, spun clockwise and came to rest on its side behind the cab of the semi.
After being struck by the semi, the van tipped onto its side, skidded east on the highway and started on fire with two occupants inside. The only survivor, a 2-year-old child, was taken to the Marshfield Medical Center and was released to family members.
There were a total of nine Virginia residents in the van at the time of the crash, seven of which were ejected, including the 2-year-old survivor.
Liddicoat was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Merrillan First Responders and Fire Department, Black River Falls Ambulance, Hatfield Fire Department and First Responders, Neillsville Area Ambulance and Fire Department, Marshfield Fire Department Ambulance Service all responded to the scene with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Clark County Emergency Management and the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
