The pilot of a small plane that went down in Virginia on Thursday afternoon suffered injuries after being forced to make an emergency crash landing in a Fredericksburg field after a mechanical failure, officials say. A 27-year-old pilot masterfully landed a small plane on Loudoun County Parkway Friday, Jan. 19, officials said. Ahmed Awais, of Florida, was headed to Lancaster Airport in PA, and had just departed from Dulles Airport with Southern Airways Express Flight 246, when the plane went down in the DIREX lanes near Arcola Mills Drive, around 12:15 p.m., according to the FAA and local authorities. Everything is a landing site during an emergency. A medivac pilot proved that on Wednesday, July 6, after they landed a helicopter on Interstate 395 to rescue a police officer. Park police requested the helicopter to rescue a motorcycle officer who'd crashed on Maine Avenue, WJLA said. A US Park Police pilot had no choice but to land on I-395 around 6:30 p.m. to whisk the officer away to a nearby hospital for treatment. A Maryland-bound plane made an emergency landing in New Jersey after the cockpit became filled with smoke, officials said. The single-engine Piper PA-32 departed from Norwood Regional Airport in Norwood, Mass., and was headed toward Montgomery County Airpark in Gaithersburg, the FAA said.
