Fewer Lives Lost: Thanksgiving Traffic Deaths Drop Across Virginia For Third Straight Year
Seven people lost their lives in crashes on Virginia roadways over the 2024 Thanksgiving holiday, a significant decrease from previous years, according to Virginia State Police.
The five-day period surveyed by officials, which ran from Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Sunday, Dec. 1, saw seven fatal crashes across the state in Bath, Culpeper, Page, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Warren, and Wythe counties, officials said.
It represents an improvement compared to 11 fatalities in 2023 and a steep drop from 19 in 2022.

Driver, 18, Dies Weeks After Fairfax County Crash
An 18-year-old driver has died of injuries suffered in a Fairfax County crash on Jan. 2, authorities said.
Jose Armando Sanchez Aguilar, of Reston, was heading south on Fairfax County Parkway when he lost control of his 2011 Honda Civic, left the roadway, and struck the sound barrier wall just after 5 a.m., county police said.
Sanchez Aguilar was hospitalized with serious injuries and died on Jan. 17, county police said.
His passenger, a woman, was also transported to the hospital in conditions considered to be non-life threatening.

Speeding Driver Charged In Crash That Killed 27-Year-Old Engineer In Fairfax County
Charges have been filed against a 53-year-old driver who was speeding before a crash that killed a 27-year-old motorcyclist in Fairfax County, police said.
Gael Cruchet, 53, of Ashburn was driving the 2016 Acura TLX well above the posted speed limit when they struck Zafeer Piracha, of Lorton, on Rt. 28 in Centreville on Friday, Nov. 27, police said.
Piracha was ejected from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene.

Bilecer Turcios Hernandez, of Woodbridge, and Juan Jose Bonilla Bonilla, of Woodbridge, were both speeding — perhaps, drag-racing — in the moments before the Wednesday, Aug. 30 crash on Minnieville Road and Hedgewood Drive in Woodbridge, Prince William County police said.

13 Dead, 4,475 Speeders Stopped Over Labor Day Weekend In Virginia
Thirteen people died in 10 traffic crashes over Labor Day weekend in Virginia, and five of the accidents involved motorcycles, State Police said.
Virginia State Police also stopped 4,475 speeders and 1,945 reckless drivers. State troopers also cited 491 seat belt violations and 150 child restraint violations, over the holiday weekend.
The 2023 Labor Day statistical counting period began at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, and concluded at midnight Monday, Sept. 4, 2023.

Fairfax County police have shared the results of their "50 Means 50" campaign.
The campaign, designed to slow down speeding drivers, reduce crashes, change driving behavior and increase overall safety on the Fairfax County Parkway, ran from May 8 to May 12.
Overall, more than 1,000 tickets and warnings were issued to reckless drivers, speeders, and those who had hands-free and licensing violations.
"Through this campaign, officers issued 890 traffic summonses, and 163 warning tickets totaling 1,053 observed violations," FCPD said.

One man has died after speeding while driving through Virginia, losing control, and crashing his truck the night before Thanksgiving, authorities announced on Monday, Nov. 28.
David Allen Starkey, 55, of Orange, was driving in Spotsylvania shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, in the 9300 block of Plank Road when he reportedly crashed his 2019 Chevy Silverado, according to a spokesperson from the sheriff's office.

Couple Killed In Fairfax Crash Involving Speed, Alcohol: Police
A couple from Prince William County was killed in an early morning crash in Fairfax County on Friday, Oct. 7, police said.
At around 4 a.m., 51-year-old Lori Byars, the driver of a Mercedes, and 59-year-old David Turch, the passenger, were heading east on Leesburg Pike, when their car veered off the road, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
The car slammed into a light pole and then hit a traffic sign, before coming to a complete stop, officials reported.
