Troopers Rescue 11 Boaters Sinking Off Jersey Shore Eleven passengers in a sinking boat were rescued by New Jersey State Police. On Aug. 14, several troopers rescued the passengers from the 21-foot boat in Point Pleasant. At 4:24 p.m., Sergeant First Class Christopher Kochman, along with Troopers Michael Sugzda, Kristofer Buonomo, Francis Morris, and Luke Drazdik of Point Pleasant Station observed a vessel in distress in the Point Pleasant Canal. Authorities ID Irvington Kayaker Who Died In Raritan Bay Police have identified a kayaker who died after being pulled from Raritan Bay. Carlos Melendez, 64, of Irvington, was kayaking with a friend when police were called at about 1:35 p.m. Sunday, July 31, Keyport police said. Police found one kayaker on the shore. That person told police Melendez was still in the water. Officer Chris DeGroat, a member of the Monmouth County dive team, took a kayak and went into the bay and found the man, Keyport police said. Firefighters Rescue Pooch On The Lam Who Escaped To Tiny Prince William Island Prince William County firefighters had to rescue a dog after it escaped from animal control earlier this week.  The fire department shared photos of a daring water rescue of a chihuahua who got loose from Animal Control and jumped into a pond to escape on Tuesday, July 5. Firefighters jumped into a boat along with animal control workers and captured the pirate pooch after it doggy paddled to a small island a few hundred feet away from the shore.  They returned the wet dog to shore without injury.
