Hasbrouck Heights Pair Charged In Deadly Fentanyl Overdose In Hackensack
Two Hasbrouck Heights residents have been arrested and charged in connection with a deadly fentanyl overdose in Hackensack, authorities said.
Robert Wichowski, 31, and Xiomara Frias-Barbosa, 28, were taken into custody on Wednesday, March 5, following a months-long investigation into the Nov. 2, 2024, overdose death of a 54-year-old man at a private residence in Hackensack, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

Students could soon go from scrolling to schooling.
A bold initiative unveiled by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday, Jan. 22, would restrict smartphone use in all K-12 schools during the entire school day, including lunch time.
The proposal, introduced as part of the governor’s 2026 Executive Budget, aims to prioritize student learning and mental health, Hochul’s office said.

A couple was shot multiple times and killed inside a North Philadelphia home, and police have arrested a suspect for their murders, authorities announced on Monday, Jan. 6.
Bilal Simmons, 46, was taken into custody and charged with murder. As a former convict, he has also been charged with violation of the Uniform Firearms Act, police said.

Lights Out! Balloon Release To Blame For Power Outage That Affected 5,600 In Bridgeport
More than 5,000 Connecticut residents lost power earlier this week after a woman released a mylar balloon that struck a series of electrical lines, authorities said.
The outage occurred around noon Tuesday, Dec. 3, and affected 5,600 customers in the Bridgeport area, a spokesperson for United Illuminating said in an email. Crews restored power to by about 2 p.m., the company said.

Three Firefighters Injured, 50 Displaced In Passaic Blaze, Authorities Say
A fire in Passaic on Sunday, June 23 injured three fighters and initially displaced more than 50 people, authorities said.
At 9 p.m. firefighters responded to a home on High Street, according to a release from the City of Passaic. The fire quickly spread to four homes, forcing firefighters to rescue four people who were stranded on the roofs of two different properties, authorities said.
No residents were injured, though a dog died from smoke inhalation, authorities said. Three firefighters were hospitalized, two from heat exhaustion and one with a shoulder injury, authorities said.
