Victim Of Fatal Westchester House Fire Was A Popular Teacher, Former HS Athlete The victim of a fatal house fire that broke out earlier this week in Westchester is being remembered as a popular teacher and former high school athlete. Roberto Eric Pallas was 33.  The fire broke out in the Village of Mamaroneck at around noontime, Sunday, Nov. 7 in the basement at 518 Walnut St. A 2006 graduate of Rye Neck High School, where he played both tennis and basketball, he received a Bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University in 2010.  He had worked in customer service as a supervisor for Tommie Copper in Armonk. Zach Chmelecki, Former HS Football, Lacrosse Player In Westchester, Dies At 23 Zachary Thomas Chmelecki, of Rye Neck, died on Tuesday, Jan. 26. He was 23. Zack was born Oct. 13, 1997, to Charles and Lisa (nee Zaccaria) Chmelecki. A football and lacrosse player, he played for Iona Prep and later Rye Neck High School where he graduated in 2015.  Later in his life, he was passionate about surfing, fishing, and cooking.  "Zack was a presence; his smile brightened every room he entered," according to his obituary. He leaves behind his mother, Lisa, and sister, Nicole, along with his grandmother, Rita Chmelecki. Zack's father, Charles, died in August 2020 at a…

These Westchester Students Named National Merit Semifinalists Some of Westchester County’s best and brightest students were among those chosen as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, which celebrates academic achievement in high school students. On Wednesday, 16,000 high school seniors were chosen from around the country. Those 16,000 will soon be pared to 7,500 finalists, who will be picked to receive upwards of $31 million in scholarships, which will be announced next spring as they prepare to continue their educations in college. Westchester HS Teacher Sentenced In Child Porn Case A former high school teacher in Westchester has been sentenced after pleading guilty to federal child pornography charges. Nicholas Pagliuca, 66, a Somers resident who worked at Rye Neck High School in Mamaroneck, was sentenced on Friday in White Plains to three years in federal prison Friday for the possession and receipt of child porn. Pagliuca was arrested shortly before Thanksgiving two years ago and entered a guilty plea to signing up for a child pornography website and downloading hundreds of pornographic images and videos of children.
