Dump Truck Crash Temporarily Shuts Down Route 50 In Fairfax County: Police Route 50 was shut down for approximately an hour in Fairfax County on Monday morning when a dump truck driver crashed and took down some power lines.  At around 6 a.m. on Oct. 7, officers were called to assist at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on the usually-busy roadway near Fair Ridge Drive in Fair Lakes.  The crash resulted in Route 50 being closed in both directions on Monday morning while crews made repairs, resulting in major delays and temporary traffic backups until the scene could be cleared. Police have identified Upper Marlboro resident Roger Ferguson as the motorcyclist who was killed in a Landover Road crash in Cheverly on Thursday.  At approximately 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 22, officers were called to a stretch of the roadway near Route 50 to investigate a crash, where they found Ferguson suffering from critical injuries. Annapolis resident Shannon Rita Alan was identified by investigators as the driver who crashed shortly before 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 6 in the southbound lanes of I-97 near Route 50. Thomas Nyers, of Galloway, was heading north on the roadway in Hamilton when 29-year-old James Langlois, of Richland, was heading south in a 2017 Dodge Ram around 6:05 p.m., Hamilton police said. Langlois crossed into the northbound lane of travel hitting Nyers' vehicle south of Old Egg Harbor Road, authorities said. The Confederacy Falls Again: Fairfax County Moving Forward With Highway Name Changes The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted to change two highway names that are tied to the confederacy. After a nine to one vote, Lee highway and Lee-Jackson highway will now be called Route 29 and Route 50, respectively. This vote came after a year's worth of work from the Confederate Names Task Force of Fairfax County. The only person who voted against the plans to rename the highways was the board's sole Republican supervisor, Pat Herrity.
