Plastic From Bottled Water Entangles Seal On NJ Beach
A Jersey Shore animal rehabilitation center rescued a baby seal tangled up in plastic wrapping from a case of bottled water. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) said the female grey seal was found on the shore in Beach Haven at around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15. The pup was brought to MMSC's facility in Brigantine, and the plastic packaging was removed. The center's veterinarian examined the baby seal and found that the plastic had not cut into her neck. Baby Seal Rescued After Wandering Streets Of Jersey Shore City
A Jersey Shore animal rehabilitation center rescued a baby seal after it was seen wandering around an Ocean City neighborhood. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) said it first received a call about the grey seal pup at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7. After coming ashore, it was spotted on West Avenue between 42nd and 43rd streets. The male seal then went through a backyard and along a sidewalk before moving into the middle of 42nd Street. Coastal Flooding Advisory Issued Across Jersey Shore This Week
Parts of the Jersey Shore are on alert for minor coastal flooding this week, according to forecasters. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a coastal flood advisory for Atlantic, Cape May, and Ocean counties. The advisory was put into effect until 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, but flooding is also possible Tuesday and Wednesday. Jersey Shore City Gets $3.8M In Upgrades To Water Infrastructure
A city in Cape May County will receive nearly $4 million in new water pipes to replace aging infrastructure that's more than a century old. Ocean City will get $3.8 million in upgrades for more than a mile of water main, New Jersey American Water announced on Friday, Jan. 26. Jersey Shore City Increases Fees, Regulations For Boardwalk Performers
The Ocean City beachfront will feel and sound a little different this summer after new rules were approved to regulate boardwalk performers. City council unanimously passed an ordinance on Thursday, Jan. 25 to raise the fee for a performance permit to $200. The regulations also limit musicians and other performers to two "entertainment zones" along the boardwalk. The zones for performances will be between Fifth and Eighth streets, as well as 12th through 14th streets. Lifeguards won't be the only ones patrolling Ocean City beaches this summer, as falcons will be on the prowl up in the sky. Ocean City will continue using falcons to prevent seagulls from becoming a nuisance along the oceanfront. More than 14,000 customers across the Jersey Shore are without power on Monday, Jan. 10, after strong winds and rain raced across New Jersey overnight. Most of those who lost electricity are in Monmouth County, according to utility companies. Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) said 10,489 customers were without power as of 11 a.m. Those included 2,169 customers in Marlboro, 1,238 in Millstone, and 1,088 in Colts Neck. Jeffrey Surgent called the Ocean City Police Department saying he suffers from mental illness and he just killed his mom just before 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said.
