West Nile Virus Found In Mosquitoes On Long Island; Here's How To Protect Yourself
Health officials on Long Island are urging people to take precautions after testing of mosquitoes confirmed the presence of West Nile Virus.
Twelve mosquito samples were positive for the virus following testing done at locations around Suffolk County, according to county Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott.
The samples were collected on Sunday, July 2, and Monday, July 3, in Northport, Melville, West Babylon, Lindenhurst, Holbrook, Holtsville, North Patchogue, Farmingville, and Manorville.
It brings the total number of positive mosquito samples this year to 16.

Man Strikes Employee With Pistol, Robs Smoke Shops In North Patchogue, Shirley, Authorities Say
Police are searching for a man who robbed two Long Island smoke shops at gunpoint.
A man struck an employee with a pistol at Nirvana Smoke Shop in North Patchogue and pushed two others to the ground at about 10 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 26, Suffolk County Crime Stoppers reported on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
He left the store, located at 382 Medford Ave., with cash, Crime Stoppers said.
About 20 minutes later, he pointed a gun at employees at Lucky Smoke Shop and Beer, located at 20 Floyd Road in Shirley, and stole cash, according to the report.

Two-Vehicle Crash Kills 21-Year-Old Long Island Man
Police on Long Island are investigating a two-vehicle crash that killed one and injured another person.
The crash took place at 2:50 p.m., Thursday, July 8, in North Patchogue, said the Suffolk County Police.
Demetrius Hall, age 21, of Bellport, was traveling southbound on North Ocean Avenue in a 2003 Honda Accord when it veered into the northbound lane and collided with a 1995 Peterbilt truck, according to police.
Hall was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Suspect Nabbed For 2018 Shooting Death Of Long Island Man, Police Say
A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a 2018 murder of a Long Island resident.
Suffolk County Police, assisted by the US Marshals and the NYPD Warrant Squad, arrested Ade Ngaii, age 37, of Manhattan, on Thursday, June 24, for killing a man in North Patchogue on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018.
According to detectives, Kristopher Appell, age 30, was found dead after officers responded to his home for a report of an injured and unconscious man.
When officers arrived, they found Appell dead from gunshot wounds.
Ngaii has been charged with second-degree murder.
Man Dies From Injuries After Crash At Busy Long Island Intersection
A man has died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash at a busy Long Island intersection.
The crash happened Saturday, Sept. 12 in North Patchogue.
Edisson Chocho-Uzho, 24, of Patchogue, was driving a 2010 Acura southbound on North Ocean Avenue, attempted to make a left turn onto eastbound Shaber Road when the vehicle collided with a Kawasaki motorcycle traveling northbound on North Ocean Avenue, Suffolk County Police.

Advisory Issued For Suffolk Residents, Visitors After 15 Samples Test Positive For West Nile
An advisory has been issued on Long Island after there were more than a dozen new mosquito samples that tested positive for West Nile Virus.
Suffolk County Health Commissioner Gregson Pigott announced that 15 new mosquito samples tested positive for the virus after being collected on Tuesday, July 21, and Wednesday, July 22.
The positive samples were collected in Bay Shore (six); Islip (three); with one each in Bay Shore, Brentwood, Great River, Huntington Station, North Patchogue, and West Babylon.
