Lawrence "Larry" Sager, 74, of Hummlestown died of multiple traumatic injuries from the crash at UPMC Harrisburg at 4:52 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2023 and the plane is registered to Kenneth "Ken" Sager of Hummlestown, according to the FAA.
Friends of the family posted on social media that Ken is at Hershey Medical Center and has undergone surgery. One friend said that "He had just put thousands of dollars into an engine refurbishment a month ago, (and) was planning to fly it to Alaska."
The plane was flying from Cumberland, MD to Capital City airport according to flight logs but was attempting an emergency landing on the turnpike when they ran out of space and hit the truck, according to the family friends.
The crash happened at mile marker 241.9 by the I-76 ramp for the interchange with I-83 at exit 242 around 2:30 p.m. on May 31, 2023, officials with multiple agents explained.
The crash involved a utility truck on Interstate 76, according to dispatchers and video of the scene on PennDOT's 511PA.
The plane involved was a Cessna Sky Wagon 180, according to the FAA.
The cause of the crash remains unknown.
