It happened on I-295 in Bristol Township just before 5 a.m., state police wrote in a release.
A trooper had pulled off the eastbound lane to assist with a disabled vehicle near mile marker 0.7 when a BMW rear-ended his squad car, officials wrote. The police car then rear-ended the disabled vehicle, they added.
The trooper leaped over the concrete barrier to avoid being hit, suffering minor wounds in the process, authorities said. Meanwhile, the driver of the BMW was taken to the Saint Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, where their condition is unclear.
State police are reminding all drivers that, under Pennsylvania law, motorists must move to a further lane when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle. When it's not possible to merge safely, drivers should slow to 20 mph below the posted speed limit, troopers added.
