RM Palmer chocolate factory on South 2nd Avenue erupted in a fiery blast at around 5 p.m. on March 24, Daily Voice reported. At a press conference late on Sunday, March 26, West Reading Police Chief Wayne Holben announced that two more victims had been located, bringing the death toll to seven.
One person was found alive in the rubble on Friday night, while at least ten victims were hospitalized at Reading Hospital, a spokesperson told the New York Times.
In a statement, West Reading Mayor Samantha Kaag said officials are still investigating what caused the fatal explosion.
"We are still working diligently behind the scenes — please utilize us for resources if you were affected — I truly mean it when I say I am so proud of the community, the county, and I am so honored to be the Mayor of West Reading," she said.
Also on Sunday evening, West Reading officials announced the following street closures, to remain in effect until further notice:
- The ramp from 422 East to Penn Ave. to enter West Reading Borough
- The ramp from 422 West to Penn Ave. to enter West Reading Borough
- Penn Ave @ 3rd Ave (3rd Ave is open to cross traffic)
- Penn Ave @ 4th Ave
- 3rd Ave @ Franklin Street
- Franklin St. @ Yarnell St.
- Chestnut St. @ 2nd Ave.
- Franklin St. @ 2nd Ave.
Changes and road openings will be announced as they are determined, but drivers are asked to plan alternate routes for now, said the West Side Regional Emergency Management Agency.
