Kasey Trent of Freeland, Maryland, was driving south on Steltz Road around 1:54 a.m. when he lost control while attempting a left curve at high speed. His vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a tree, overturned, and crashed into a gas line, causing a dangerous propane leak, investigators said.

York County 911 dispatched fire, EMS, police, the York County Hazmat Team, and the coroner’s office to the scene. Trent was pronounced dead on arrival.

Hazmat crews determined the crash had damaged the above-ground valves of an underground propane tank, prompting an emergency flaring operation to safely burn off the gas. As emergency responders assisted the home’s displaced residents—including calling the Red Cross for aid—crews continued flaring the propane, a process still ongoing as of 10:30 a.m.

The York County Coroner’s Office and PSP Troop J’s Forensic Services Unit are investigating.
