John Steffy was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox eastbound on State Route 322 near Sharp Avenue in Clay Township when his prosthetic leg became lodged on the accelerator while turning south onto Sharp Avenue, the Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department detailed in the news release.
Steffy’s vehicle struck a 2025 Chevrolet Trax driven by Eileen Sprague of Ephrata, police said. The impact caused damage to Sprague’s vehicle, though he was not injured, according to the police.
Following the collision, Steffy’s vehicle continued at a high rate of speed, crashing through a fence before launching into a nearby field, where it came to rest roughly 100 yards from the road, police said.
Steffy was taken to the hospital by EMS for treatment and evaluation. The accident remains under investigation.
