6abc reports it happened just before midnight at the Cliveden Apartments in Germantown.
"When the 16-year-old answered the door, we're not certain how many but at least one male entered the property and fired six shots, striking the 16-year-old in the abdomen and the arm," said PPD Chief Inspector Scott Small.
"We're very, very lucky that those two children, ages 5 and 7, were not struck by gunfire, because that's where the shots were fired, and there's multiple bullet holes in the living room wall, right near where these children were sleeping on the couch," he told reporters at the scene.
The 16-year-old victim was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to 6abc.
Small said police are checking surveillance cameras at the apartment complex for footage of the shooter.
