Kelly Lynne and Michael Andrew Wilson were spotted, acting suspiciously at Clay Elementary School on July 18, according to the release by the Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department.
Investigators soon learned "that two individuals had abandoned a kitten in a bag near the dumpster on the property," as stated in the release.
The kitten was found but "it was in extremely poor health," the police said.
It was taken to Pets Emergency Treatment and Specialties, but ultimately "it had to be humanely euthanized due to his condition," the NLCRPD explained.
Investigators linked the Wilsons to the crime.
The 55-year-old had driven his 52-year-old wife to the school with the intent to place the kitten in the garbage, according to investigators.
The Ephrata couple were each charged with two counts of cruelty to animals.
They have both been held in the Lancaster County Prison on $10,000 unsecured bail each and have status hearings scheduled in the coming months, court records show.
