Reports of a downed aircraft near the West Side Highway and Spring Street in Lower Manhattan came in just before 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, the NYPD said on X.

The chopper, operated by New York Helicopters, was carrying three adults and three children when it lost control shortly after turning at the George Washington Bridge to fly along the New Jersey shoreline, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. The aircraft hit the water closer to Hoboken.

Video shared on X showed the helicopter broken into pieces with its tail severed as it plummeted into the water.

"It hit the water inverted. The cabin piece was visible above the water," Tisch said.

Among the victims was a family of tourists from Spain, NBC New York reports. Their identities had not been released as of 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Jersey City Police Department has begun an investigation, in coordination with the National Transportation Safety Board, a spokeswoman for the mayor's office said. The National Transportation Safety Board will take over as lead agency upon their arrival, a spokeswoman said.

The Jersey City Office of Emergency Management is securing the helicopter, authorities said. There were no victims or property damage reported on land in Jersey City.
