Gabriel Cartagena, the 44-year-old man wanted in connection with a double homicide last month in Allentown, has surrendered, police announced. Cartagena turned himself in on Thursday, Jan. 4, after warrants for his arrest on two counts of criminal homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and various weapons offenses were issued, Allentown Police Chief Charles Roca said. A teenager in Lehigh County will be charged as an adult for his role in the shooting death of a William Allen High School football player, authorities said. The woman who died after being struck by a car outside Dieruff High School in Allentown has been identified as a paraprofessional at the school, authorities said. Angela Yowakim, 25, was crossing Irving Street near Andre Reed Way when she was hit by the car just before the school day started around 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, according to Allentown police and the Lehigh County Coroner's Office. Man Hospitalized After Falling Into Lehigh Valley River, Police Say
Emergency crews came to the rescue of a man who fell into a Lehigh Valley river on Thursday, May 19, authorities said. Allentown Police responded to Adams Island and found the victim submerged in the river just after 7:15 p.m., Police Chief Charles Roca said. Officers Kayla Balatgek and Andrew Gehringer immediately entered the river and removed the man from the water, where EMS crews began performing CPR, Roca said. A man is facing attempted murder charges after shooting his brother in Allentown, authorities said. Police are seeking information after a man was shot on an Allentown street overnight Friday. Officers found the injured man as they responded to the shooting report on the 1200 block of W. Liberty Street just before 1:20 a.m., Assistant Chief of Police Charles Roca said in a release. The man was taken by Allentown EMS to a local hospital for medical treatment and has been released, Roca said. The investigation is ongoing.
