Steelton Fire Chief Dies Suddenly After 52 Years Of Service After 52 years as a volunteer firefighter — 26 as Steelton's Fire Chief  — a local hero has died.  Eugene "Gene" Vance III, 70, had a normal day before he was found dead from a stroke at his home on Thursday, Jan. 4, Dauphin County Officials explained.  Gene was a class of 1972 graduate of Steelton-Highspire High School.
