Firefighters battled an intense house fire in Dutchess County that required a second alarm and help from multiple departments. The blaze began in Wappingers Falls just after noon on Sunday, Jan. 4, when Hughsonville firefighters were dispatched to 218 Old Hopewell Rd. after an alarm sounded, the Hughsonville Fire Department said. A man is accused of sexually abusing a child younger than 13, New York State Police announced on Sunday, Dec. 14. Julio Cesar Vargas Martinez, 30, of Red Hook, was arrested following an investigation into a reported sexual assault involving a child, according to the release. Investigators with the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Rhinebeck said they received information on Thursday, Dec. 11, about the alleged assault. Fire officials have released new details about the small fire that prompted an evacuation at the Culinary Institute of America’s Dutchess County campus. According to the Roosevelt Fire District, crews were dispatched just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, to Metz Hall after an automatic fire alarm reported smoke inside the building on the institute's Hyde Park campus, as Daily Voice previously reported. A 28-year-old employee of a school in the region faces a felony charge after allegedly endangering a disabled student, police said.
