19: Mild Cases Can Cause Memory Issues Months After Infection, Brand-New Study Finds
A new study has found that those who experienced mild COVID-19 can still suffer from attention and memory deficits for months after recovering. The University of Oxford reported that participants in the study completed memory and cognitive ability tests, with a focus on cognitive functions that are important for daily life. The researchers compared the results of participants who had previously had COVID-19 to those who hadn't. The study found that those who had previously had COVID-19 performed well in most abilities, including working memory and planning, but had "significantly worse epi…

19: Study Shows Chance Of Winter Surge That Could Be Worse Than Delta Variant
With the weather cooling down and crowded indoor holiday season gatherings fast approaching, a new study is showing that there could be a winter surge of COVID-19 cases that could rival the earlier emergence of the Delta variant. According to a newly released study, researchers are predicting that there is at least a 30 percent chance that states could experience a surge of new infections that could exceed the numbers seen during the spike in cases in mid-September during the variant. With activities moving indoors, there is expected to be a surge in cases, though with more Americans getti…

19: Low-Cost Steroid Dramatically Reduces Fatalities, 6,000-Patient Trial Shows
Scientists may be on the verge of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) breakthrough after discovering a low-cost drug they say is the first to reduce virus-related fatalities for patients on oxygen. After successfully carrying out a 6,000-patient trial, scientists found Dexamethasone -- a well-known, inexpensive steroid -- dramatically helped those with severe cases of the virus, the scientists at the University of Oxford in England announced. One-third of the patients in the trial that were receiving ventilation had a reduced death rate, as did the one-fifth of patients on oxygen when …

Westchester Native Awarded Nobel Prize For Breakthrough Discovery
A Hudson Valley native was one of three researchers who were awarded a Nobel Prize for showing how cells sense and adapt to changing oxygen levels, leading to the discovery of new drugs. The Nobel Prize was awarded to Gregg L. Semenza, a Sleepy Hollow High School alum, who is the C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. William G. Kaelin Jr., who teaches at Harvard, and Peter J.
