A new tornado just touched down in New York in what has been a historic year for twisters in the state. There have now been 29 tornadoes in New York this year, breaking the record of 25 in 1992. A National Weather Service Storm Survey Team examined several reports of damage in Allegany County, in the towns of Wirt and Friendship, located near Buffalo, after the incident happened in the middle of the evening on Friday, Sept. 6. A tornado touched down in the Hudson Valley as post-Tropical Depression Debby swept through the Northeast. The incident happened at 5:52 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, in Ulster County near the New York State Thruway interchange in the town of New Paltz. "We have patrolled the surrounding area and have not found any damage to structures or reported injuries," the New Paltz Police Department reports. One person was killed during a two-and-a-half hour span when at least five tornadoes touched down in New York State this week, the National Weather Service announced following a survey of the damage, and more confirmations could be coming. An investigation is underway to determine if a tornado touched down in the Hudson Valley during a round of severe storms on Thursday, May 23. The probe is focusing on the Orange County village of Greenwood Lake. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for parts of the region and may be expanded as several lines of storms, currently mainly north of I-84, are moving from west to east. Currently, the watch is in effect for Dutchess and Ulster counties in the Hudson Valley, Litchfield and Hartford counties in Connecticut, and Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester counties in Massachusetts. Rockland Man, 71, Falls Nearly 20 Feet From Ladder Helping Mahwah Friend After Storm
A 71-year-old Rockland man trying to help a Mahwah homeowner remove a tree branch from his roof following Tuesday’s storm lost his balance and fell nearly 20 feet off a ladder, authorities said. The victim, from Spring Valley, was conscious and alert but had a large cut on his forehead when officers arrived at the Wyckoff Avenue home shortly after 8 p.m., Mahwah Police Chief Stephen Jaffe said. The storms that struck the Hudson Valley this week have led to nearly a million gallons of partially treated waste being discharged into the Hudson River in Dutchess County. Officials from the City of Poughkeepsie Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) announced the discharge on North Water Street shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning, before the storm surged in the region.
