The 11-year-old has been practicing gymnastics for seven years, competing for five.

She is a member of the USAG level 8 girls team and considers the other gymnasts among her "closest friends."

"I've known them since I was four and we have many highs and lows together. They are always there for me."

Asked why she likes gymnastics Nikki said it makes her feel challenged.

"Once I get a difficult skill, it makes me feel like all the other things I do in and out of the gym are easy," she explained.

"I like the switch from school classroom to high activity at gymnastics at night."

The sports main challenges are that it is sometimes "frustrating and scary," said Nikki.

"But I trust my coaches Edgar and Anna" - husband and wife, Edgar Hatch and Anna Vasilevsky, Rockland Gymastics Academy owners.
