The incident occurred at 6 Hurd Ave., in the early morning hours when a car parked in front of the residence had a malfunction that engulfed the entire vehicle and then jumped to the outside of the building, said Inspector Fred Viohl.
The building, which houses three apartments and one commercial business, was scorched on the outside and received smoke damage, but only one second-floor apartment received interior damage including broken windows, and smoke and water damage, Viohl said.
The power to the building was turned off until a thorough inspection could be performed, he added.
An electrician was working at the residence Tuesday installing new smoke alarms and checking all of the wiring, Viohl said.
"After I have a final check of the building, I expect to be able to let the residents move back in except for the apartment that needs repair," he said.
The West Haverstraw Volunteer Fire Department helped save the home by containing the fire to the outside of the residence. They received assistance from the Thiells Fire Department.
No residents or firefighters were injured.
The families were being helped by the American Red Cross.
