A popular and accomplished Hudson Valley councilman died after suffering a heart attack at age 54. Rockland County Councilman Mark Woods, of Clarkstown, died on Friday, May 17, from an apparent heart attack, town officials said. Woods, a member of the Clarkstown Board and director of peer veteran services at the nonprofit BRIDGES was elected to represent Ward 1 in November 2023. Nearly 750 Students From Area High Schools Attend Construction Career Day
The 20th Annual Construction Career Day at Rockland Community College in Suffern drew more than 750 high school student attendees, according to a county release. The event consisted of representation from skilled workers of more than 15 different building and construction trades. Workers carried out hands-on demonstrations using tools and materials of their trade. Attack On 89-Year-Old Woman In Area Was Sexual Assault, Police Say
An 89-year-old woman who was attacked by an unknown man or group of men was also sexually assaulted, according to the Clarkstown Police Department. According to the department's Detective Bureau, the attack of the woman sometime between 5 p.m. on Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday near Normandy Village in Nanuet, is being classified as a sexual assault based on medical examinations of the victim, said Officer Peter Walker, spokesman for the department. A 42-year-old Haverstraw man has been indicted for attempted murder and first- and second-degree assault, after getting into a fight with his girlfriend and attacking her son with a machete, according to Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe.
