Beloved Longtime Somers Firefighter, Veteran Dies: Served Up Until Death
A Northern Westchester community is mourning the loss of a decorated firefighter, Navy veteran, and lifelong public servant who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Somers resident Walter McDonald died on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at the age of 90, according to his obituary. Born in Mount Vernon on Feb. 18, 1934, McDonald dedicated much of his life to serving others. Crews had to shore a compromised part of a Northern Westchester medical care building after a vehicle crashed through its wall. The crash happened on Thursday, Dec. 12 around 2:45 p.m., when a car crashed into the Optum Medical Care building at 342 Route 202 in Somers, according to the Somers Volunteer Fire Department. A driver was hospitalized after crashing into a still-under-construction house in Northern Westchester. The crash happened on Wednesday, Aug. 14 just before 12:30 p.m., when a vehicle collided with a house on Muscoot River Road in the town of Somers, according to the Somers Volunteer Fire Department. Emergency crews raced to a Northern Westchester residence after a smoking lithium-ion battery was found inside. The incident happened on Thursday, May 23 around 6:30 p.m., when a smoking lithium-ion battery was found at a Somers home on Loomis Drive.
