Jason Copper Dies After Crash With Fire Engine: Scpd

A man was killed when his car collided with a fire truck in Medford, Suffolk County Police announced on Thursday, March 20.

Jason Copper, 39, of Sound Beach, was driving a 2015 Dodge Dart eastbound on Express Drive South when he was hit by a Medford Fire Department truck at the Route 112 intersection around 12:35 p.m., police said. The fire truck, driven by 50-year-old Wilfredo Garcia of Medford, had its lights and sirens activated at the time.

Copper was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Garcia and two passengers from the fire truck were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks, according to police.

The Suffolk County Police Department’s Sixth Squad detectives and Motor Carrier Section officers are continuing to investigate.
