Separate Bear Sightings Reported In Northern Westchester Hamlet
A black bear gave some residents in Northern Westchester a quick scare as it made the rounds through an otherwise quiet neighborhood last week. A Sunset Drive resident in Armonk reported a black bear that was lounging in a tree shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, the North Castle Police Department said, with an officer confirming the bear sighting upon arrival to the home. Woman Rescued By Forest Rangers After Crashing ATV In Hudson Valley
State Forest Rangers recently responded to a serious ATV accident in the Hudson Valley in which a woman was injured. The incident took place around 9:45 p.m., Friday, June 11m when Rangers were contacted by Ulster County 911 requesting assistance for an ATV accident at 146 Belleayre Ridge Road near Belleayre Mountain in the town of Shandaken, the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Man Injured By Black Bear While Checking Noise Outside Home In Area
A New York man was injured by a black bear after going outside to see what was in his garbage can. The attack happened around 11 p.m., Friday, June 4 in Sullivan County in the hamlet of Rock Hill. The homeowner heard a noise near the trash containers, went outside, and was reportedly scratched by the bear, said officials with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Black Bear Spotted On Busy Roadway In Northern Westchester
Some Northern Westchester residents welcomed an unexpected visitor to the neighborhood when a black bear was spotted making the rounds in the area. The Peekskill Police Department issued an alert that there was a reported black bear sighting this week in the area of Welcher Avenue and Washington Street. While taking in the sights, the bear did not approach anyone or cause any disturbances. A New York State Police trooper in the Hudson Valley came to the rescue of an injured bald eagle who found itself in a precarious position on the side of Route 17. On Tuesday, March 16, a motorist contacted New York State Police in Middletown to report an injured eagle in Orange County that was on the side of Route 17 in Blooming Grove. Muskrat Stuck In Fence Rescued By Wildlife Officer In Area
A muskrat stuck in a chain-link fence in the area was saved with the help of a wildlife officer. The incident took place on Friday, April 24 in Dutchess County when the Department of Environmental Conservation officers received word of the muskrat's situation in the city of Beacon. Injured Owl Fledgling Saved By Wildlife Officers In Area
An injured owl fledgling was saved by members of the Department of Environmental Conservation after finding it in Sullivan County. The owl was saved after the DEC received a report on Wednesday, April 22, in the town of Neversink. Department officers Glen Parker and Christopher Doroski responded and were able to local the owl and capture it without incident. The owl was taken to the New Paltz Animal Hospital where it was evaluated and determined to be underweight and suffering from an injured keel. More than 200 gallons of oil flowed down a hill, spilled into Lake Mahopac and had to be cleaned up by first responders. The oil spill was reported on Mount Hope Road in Mahopac at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, prompting a heavy response by multiple emergency agencies. SUNY New Paltz Closed Through Week's End Due To Reports Of Tainted Water
All classes have been canceled through the end of the week at SUNY New Paltz due to reported tainted water. College officials at the campus in Ulster County said they made the decision on Tuesday, Feb. 11, to close out of an abundance of caution for the safety of students after being notified by a precautionary advisory issued by the Village of New Paltz.
