"With all of the recent events that have arisen around the country regarding racism and the Confederate Flag, the City of Newburgh Police Department wishes to convey its deepest apologies to the community regarding the recent posting on Instagram by one of its members. Our department has worked tirelessly to create transparency within our department and to build an open and trusting relationship with the community. We sincerely hope that the members of the community can look past this one person and see the many dedicated officers whose goal is to serve and protect all members of our community with equality and fairness, regardless of race, religion, sex or creed."
The Times Herald-Record reported on the Instagram post on Tuesday. It displayed a confederate flag with the words "This does not offend me." It was also accompanied by a photo of what appeared to be two black males with the text: "But this [explative] does."
The president of the City of Newburgh PBA has since resigned his position, the Record said.
