The Sheriff's Office has received multiple complaints regarding the phone scammers saying the Internal Revenue Service will issue arrest warrants if a sum of money is not paid, according to the statement.
The caller goes on to say that the Sheriff’s Office will be sent to make an arrest if the money is not paid, Falco's office warned. The IRS will never call and threaten to issue a warrant, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Aggressive and threatening phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents remain a major threat to taxpayers, but now the IRS is receiving new reports of scammers calling under the guise of verifying tax return information over the phone, said the release.
The latest variation being seen in the last few weeks tries to play off the current tax season, the Sheriff's Office said.
Scam artists call saying they have your tax return, and they just need to verify a few details to process it, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The scam tries to get you to give up personal information such as a Social Security number or personal financial information, such as bank numbers or credit cards, said the Sheriff's Office.
Reports of fraudulent calls may be made directly to the IRS at 800-366-4484 or email tigta.gov.
In the past some fraudulent callers have apparently used software to spoof the Sheriff’s Office main number, so that the number (845) 638-5400 appears on the caller ID, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff informs residents that the Sheriff’s Office never calls and requests monetary payment for bail over the phone and that bail is only accepted at the headquarters, or the Correctional Facility, said the Sheriff's Office.
Anyone who has received a similar call is asked to report to the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible, the Sheriff's Office said.
