Law enforcement officers will be cracking down on drunk drivers with sobriety checkpoints, beefed-up DWI patrols, and underage drinking details.
State Police and officers from Stony Point, Haverstraw, Clarkstown, Ramapo, and Orangetown will also be ticketing distracted drivers who use handheld electronic devices.
The crackdown starts on Thursday, March 17, and runs through Sunday, March 20, police said.
"Be smart when celebrating St. Patrick’s Day," said County Executive Ed Day. "If you know you’re going to drink -- whether with friends at a pub or at a party -- designate a sober driver ahead of time or call a cab to make sure you get home safely.”
“There’s never an excuse for driving after drinking,” Day said.
There are many ways to find a safe way home, said New York's STOP-DWI Foundation.
The foundation’s “Have a Plan” mobile app -- available as a free download for smart phones – will do just that, it said.
